Cooking in the HGV cab: the 12-volt kit that actually works, what I stopped buying at service stations, and the one-pot routine that gets me through a tramping week

Three years of eating service station sandwiches and vending machine hot dogs. Then someone showed me a 12v slow cooker at Lymm and I worked out where my money was going.

Service stations are not your friend. You already know this.

January, Stafford Services northbound, 11pm. I'd been on the road since half five. The Costa was closed. The WHSmith sandwich fridge had three BLTs left and they'd been there since morning. The hot food counter was off. I bought a vending machine pasty for £3.20 and ate it in the cab while the engine cooled down.

I did that three or four nights a week for the first year of tramping. Pasties, sandwiches, the occasional pot noodle off a hot water dispenser. I stopped adding it up after a month because the number was genuinely upsetting.

Then I met a lad at Lymm who had a rice cooker going in the back of his cab, a small bag of groceries he'd picked up from a Tesco Express on the way through, and a proper meal ready before his rest started. He'd been tramping for nine years. He looked healthier than me. I asked him how.

It's not complicated. But there's a bit of kit involved, and some of it is useless, and knowing which is which saves money twice — once on the gear you don't buy, and once on the food you don't pay service station prices for.

The power situation in the cab

Most cabs run 24-volt electrical systems. The cigarette lighter-style sockets are 12V stepped down from the 24V supply. Serious cooking appliances are 12V or 24V, and the voltage matters — a 12V appliance run off a 24V system through an adapter burns out fast or doesn't work properly.

The other option is an inverter — a device that converts the truck's DC supply to mains AC. Good inverters (1500W or 2000W pure sine wave, not modified sine wave) let you run standard household appliances. They're heavier, draw more from the battery, and need proper installation or at least a quality connection point. But they mean you can use a standard 230V kettle, a small microwave, or any normal plug-in appliance.

Running any of this on engine-off means drawing from the cab's batteries. Tractor units with good leisure battery setups can sustain a 12V kettle or a slow cooker for a reasonable period. Units without a decent leisure battery arrangement drain the cranking battery and you're getting a jump-start at 5am. Not ideal.

Ask about the vehicle's battery setup before you go shopping for cooking kit. Some of the newer Volvo and Scania units with proper APU (auxiliary power units) or shore power connection can run decent kit without worrying. Older units on thin battery arrangements need more care.

The 12-volt kettle — start here

The single most useful thing in my cab. A proper 24V kettle (make sure it's 24V if your truck is 24V, or a 12/24V dual-voltage model) plugs into the cigarette socket. Takes about 8-12 minutes to boil, which is slower than a kitchen kettle but fast enough. Draws from the battery but for a single boil it's not significant.

What it solves: proper coffee in the morning without paying £3.50 at a service station counter. A packet of decent coffee, a flask, and a 24V kettle in the driver's locker means every morning starts right regardless of where I've parked. The flask keeps it hot for three or four hours on a cold night.

Also covers: packet soups, instant noodles that actually taste of something, hot chocolate for night runs, a quick warm drink in the winter layby before you try to sleep.

Look for a kettle that has an auto-shutoff when boiling and comes with a cup holder mount. The ones that roll around the passenger footwell on a fast roundabout and spill over the seat are not an upgrade on the vending machine pasty in terms of life quality.

The 12-volt or 24-volt slow cooker

This is what the lad at Lymm had. A dedicated 12V or 24V slow cooker — not a household slow cooker on an inverter, but a purpose-built cab appliance. They're typically 1.5 to 2 litres, draw 40-60W on low setting, and take 4-6 hours to cook from raw.

The routine: stop at a Tesco Express or similar on the run in. Pick up diced chicken, a tin of chickpeas, a carton of chopped tomatoes, some frozen veg if there's a freezer stop. Everything goes in the cooker cold when I park for my rest. Six hours later — actual food. Pasta, rice from the cab larder, done.

Cheap cuts of meat (shoulder, shin, thigh) work better than fillet or breast in a slow cooker. Cheaper to buy, better texture after a long cook. Root veg — carrots, potatoes, parsnips — cook well and hold their shape. Leafy stuff or fish I save for nights with shore power or APU.

The electricity draw is low enough on modern units that running it overnight on low doesn't kill the battery. On older units — test it. Cook something on a quiet night at a truck stop where there's company nearby and see what the battery reads in the morning before you rely on it for a lonely layby in January.

The inverter route — for more serious cooking

An inverter opens up proper cooking — a standard electric hob ring, a small rice cooker, a toastie maker, a compact microwave. The draw is higher and the battery question is more significant, but operators who've added proper auxiliary battery banks (separate from the cranking battery, charged from the alternator) can sustain this without issues.

The pure sine wave specification matters if you're running anything with a motor or with sensitive electronics. Modified sine wave inverters are cheaper but can cause appliances to run hot, make noise, or break early. For basic resistive loads like a kettle or a hob element, modified sine is usually fine. For a microwave or any appliance with a fan motor, pure sine is worth the extra.

A mate who runs flatbed out of DIRFT installed a 200Ah leisure battery bank and a 1500W pure sine inverter a couple of years ago. He cooks on a two-ring hob. Proper meals, every night out. His weekly food spend is about a third of what he was spending on services and he's doing four nights a week. The inverter paid for itself in six weeks.

The basics of a cab larder

Once you've got heat, what you carry matters. My standing cab stock:

  • Instant rice packets (no cooking time, just boil the bag or microwave)
  • Dried pasta (takes longer but stores forever)
  • Tins — chickpeas, kidney beans, chopped tomatoes, tuna
  • Stock cubes — turns a slow-cooker stew from bland to decent in five seconds
  • Cooking oil, salt, pepper, mixed herbs in a small spice bag
  • Proper coffee (a small cafetière plus a good coffee works better than pods)
  • Long-life milk or oat milk (lasts weeks unopened)
  • Oat bars or nuts for the run when you need something quick without stopping

Fridge is the upgrade after that. A 12V or 24V compressor fridge (not a thermoelectric cooler — those barely work and fail fast) opens up fresh produce, dairy, meat. The Waeco/Dometic models are reliable and built for cab use. They draw around 30-40W running, less when at temperature. Significant power draw compared to the kettle, so on overnight rest you want to be sure of the battery situation. On shore power or APU, no problem.

The service stations worth stopping at for food

Not all of them are terrible. Lymm Services on the M6 has a decent café that's open through the night — proper hot food, a trucker's breakfast that's reasonable for the price, staff who don't look at you like you're lost. Stafford Services northbound has improved in the last couple of years. Knutsford at J18 is average but reliable.

The places I avoid for food: the motorway services where the hot counter closes at nine and everything after midnight is out of a vending machine. Some of the A-road layby cafés are outstanding — the one on the A5 near Tamworth, for example — but they keep their own hours and you can't always plan around them.

For a proper meal on a rest break: a retail park with a Morrisons or Tesco that has a café tends to beat the services every time. Cheaper, better quality, and they're usually within distance of a decent lay-up spot. Takes a bit of route planning but once you've found a route's meal stops, you go back to them every time.

The actual weekly spend difference

When I was buying everything from services: somewhere between £80 and £120 a week on food during a full tramping week. Bad coffees, bad sandwiches, one or two hot meals from a services café.

After the slow cooker and proper cab setup: around £35-45 a week on food. Occasional service station stop for a sit-down meal once or twice a week. Better food, more of it, less misery about the cost.

The kit cost me about £150 all in for the kettle, slow cooker, some decent storage containers, and a basic spice kit. Paid back in the first fortnight.

This is the part of tramping that doesn't appear in the induction. Nobody tells you what the third week of vending machine food does to your morale. Find a routine, get the kit sorted, and the nights out become something other than a survival exercise.
